I began my mental health career as an RN at an inpatient psychiatric facility where I worked full-time for five years. I encountered just about every mental health problem. I was intrigued by the progression of people’s illnesses. I have deep sympathy for patients who live with psychotic and mood disorders. My interest in psychiatry grew and I went back to school to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. As a psychiatric NP since 2020, I have worked mainly in community psychiatric settings, serving the underserved. I also have experience treating patients in the inpatient hospital setting. My greatest character trait that makes me well-suited for the psych NP role is my passion for helping people reach their full potential. I also take a lot of pride in the knowledge, skills, and abilities of my profession; my clients appreciate that I take the time to educate them on why I think a particular treatment option may be better than another.
I enjoy listening to podcasts that help me stay up-to-date on different treatment options. My favorite podcast is the "Carlat Psychiatry Report" because they have been around for a long time and edit their podcasts to be interesting. Anyway, I find myself turning it on during commutes or road trips. I get a lot of sound advice from them and learn random medication facts. The podcasts also help me reflect on patient situations that I have encountered in the past and how I may do things more effectively in the future. I also enjoy going to consult groups with other therapists and prescribers. We go out to lunch, discuss our challenges, and celebrate our successes.
I get a lot of satisfaction when my patients struggling with ADHD symptoms discover their hidden potential and really start excelling in their professional and personal lives. I've been there myself and I totally get why people put off seeking seeking help. Once you are more open about it then you realize that there are many others struggling with the same issues but scared to ask for help.
